GENERAL VOCABULARY:

ana cupula - Jersey for "and a couple of"

"Big Ben, Parliament" is a line from European Vacation that Chevy Chase utters. Scenario: He's gotten himself stuck on a rotary in London and for whatever reason, can't get off and he keeps passing Big Ben & Parliament, which he'd initially, excitedly pointed out to his family when they'd first got on the rotary, but as he passes it for the 1000th time he sarcastically sputters between tears and laughter "Look kids, Big Ben!Parliament." So we use the line when we yo-yo a highway a bunch in one tour, or when we miss an exit and have to turn around to find it again.

cake hole,n - mouth and throat

ETD,n. - Estimated Time of Departure

gadrillion,n. - A really, really lot!

ginormous,adj. - Really REALLY big!

glom, n. - the one, or sometimes two people in a crowd who attach themselves to the band, or to me, the way super glue gets on your fingers and as you frantically try to disconnect your digits, the glom just gets more fingers involved.

We've discovered that there's usually one in every crowd. The telltale signs you're dealing with "A Glom" is
1. They ask really inappropriate questions or tell you really inappropriate things, i.e.: "You know, I slept with your father back in 68." Or "What color underpants are you wearing?";
2. They follow you backstage, or into the bathroom and get in your van without being invited;
3. They stand on top of you while you're talking to someone else and answer their questions before you can;
4. They ask "Do you have any SHWAG CDs?";
5. They eat the band's 'food and drink rider' back stage;
6. They grab your guitar and start singing your parents songs...badly;
7. They ask if I can get them JT's autograph or "you're mom's picture";
8. They don't know, while you're running at high speed dashes in the other direction every time you see them, that you're running from them;
9. They tell you they're your parents friends when really they've only just seen them on the other side of the street (keeping their distance no doubt, due to their well seasoned "glom" radar);
10. They say they'll meet you in the hotel, when you tell them you've gotta go."

gooch, adj. - Fancy, the best of the best.

hyenically, adj. - like a hyena.

kacked - asleep.

krevel, n. - dirt or grime usually associated with the bottom of one’s shoe.

mantises, v. - moves like a Praying Mantis.

'mares, n. - as in "Nightmares"

meyoweled, v. - 1/2 meow, 1/2 howl.

monasteries,v. - as in "fell silent as a monk."

NOLA, n. - New Orleans, LA.

peptomism, n. - (in reference to Pepto bismol) between optimism and pessimism. When a situation is so messed up it makes your stomach ache and there is nothing you can do about it but accept the situation and wait it out.

Po’ Boy, n. - A New Orleans version of a sub (really yummy and mostly unhealthy)

scape - as pertaining to "landscape"

schneiders, v. - A reference to a 70's sitcom called One Day at A Time where the apartment super's name is Schneider and he's always coming to the women's rescue when it comes to fixing up their apartment.

snacky cakes, n. - Snacks purchased from a gas station

tathered, adj.- tattered, feathered, displaced, frothy.

welchy, adj. - puckered, sour, impatient, sharp

Soucy (the school teacher that he is) strongly protests my use of made up words. He says that he is concerned that people reading my road diaries will pass judgment on my intellect. Frankly, I don't really care what people think. I believe that the lack of a definitive meaning behind a word, just like a song or a glance or a poem gives a reader/listener/onlooker, the opportunity to be creative and construct from the "meaningless" a meaning of their own. I feel limited enough by the boundaries of the English language and so I would prefer to paint with letters then to use them as cookie cutters to shape words into precise images. But for those who detest the ambiguous, I provide my definition of "welchy".

BUSINESS TERMS:

Basic Tracks: Recording Drums and Bass.

Cans: Head phones.

Control Room: The isolated room where the Producer and Engineer work.

Preproduction: Before a band goes into the studio they get together for a few days to work out production ideas so that no time is wasted in the studio.

Ring out the monitors: To check the stage sound for bad frequencies that might feed back during a show.

Tour: "An extremely fun and disorienting ride. A place where children's memories reside. Where dreams and laughter and reality collide. A journey that steals but does take up no time."

Track: v., future tense of recording, to lay down a single take of a performance
          n., A single channel (a track) on a mixing board on to which a musical performance can be recorded.
